Imagine this – each morning your family members collect up their dirty washing and put it in the washing machine ready for you to turn on. Well that’s never going to happen is it, so it’s likely that a wicker laundry basket or two will come in handy! Whether or not you do your laundry on a daily basis, it is useful to have somewhere where you or your family can put their dirty clothes. This will keep the bathroom and bedroom floors clear and the mess out of sight. But you do not just need any old basket, you need something that will fit in stylishly with the rest of your home décor.

Wicker laundry baskets are stylish and functional accessories to use to temporarily store your dirty linen. Ideally you will need a basket that can accommodate all of the washing that builds up between wash days so take this into account when shopping. There are also various other factors to consider to ensure you pick the best basket for your home. Please see below for our Buyers Guide.

But first perhaps we should consider why wicker, when laundry baskets also come made from canvas, metal, mesh and plastic.

The Advantages Of Wicker

Wicker laundry bins are strong, lightweight, durable and stylish. As such they fit in with most décor found in all homes and don’t need to be hidden away, they easily hold all of your laundry without losing their shape and they are easy to carry about to and from your washing machine. Wicker is also a natural material so is environmentally friendly and provides great ventilation for your laundry.

So when you compare wicker to canvas, metal, mesh and plastic, it comes out on top. Canvas baskets are typically not as sturdy and so lose their shape when filled with bulky items such as towels. Metal laundry baskets are heavier and need to be corrosion resistant and ventilated to be a good option. Canvas and metal do have the advantage of being attractive like wicker but unlike pop up mesh and plastic. The pop up mesh varieties are handy as they are so lightweight and easily stored during those rare laundry free moments but they are no good as an on-display home accessory. They are also not very strong and have no lid. Plastic laundry baskets are stronger than mesh but are also lidless and not something you want on display in your bathroom or bedroom. They can also smash or crack over time.

The only downside to wicker laundry baskets with lids is that you really need to keep them dry. Placing moist clothes in them can result in moist wicker strands that lose their integrity.

Wicker Laundry Basket Buying Guide

You may think that buying a laundry basket does not require much thought, but to get one that will serve you well, here are a few things to bear in mind.

Size and shape
Where will you be placing the basket and will it fit? Is it too high to go under that shelf or is it too wide to fit between those cabinets? Measure first to avoid disappointment later. Also is a square shape really ideal if it will stick out further than other furniture? Will a round shape look out of place?

How many?
For a large family it is often beneficial to have more than one laundry basket, perhaps one in the bathroom, one in the bedroom and one in the kids bedroom. Some styles come in various sizes so you buy matching baskets in just the right size for the specific room.

Style
White, natural and dark wood colors are those typically found in wicker laundry baskets with handles. Which will fit best with your existing décor? You should also choose a basket that pleases your sense of aesthetics.

Handles
There should be handles either cut into the sides of the basket or attached in some way. This will allow you to carry the basket and its contents to your washing machine. Alternatively the basket should have a removable liner that can be released and used to carry the laundry about in.

Capacity
Think about how much washing you have piled up between wash days. Is that cute slim line basket really going to be big enough? Unless you do your washing on a daily basis, the chances are you will want the largest basket you can find.

Liner
Nearly all large wicker laundry baskets come with a detachable liner to protect the basket from the clothes and the clothes from any protrusions in the wickerwork. Make sure yours does.

Lids
Most wicker laundry containers come with lids which are really a necessity to keep dirty washing out of sight. But do you want a lid with hinges or one that comes completely off?

Stability
Cheap baskets are always a popular option, just make sure you are not foregoing the stability of the basket. You do not want to be unpleasantly surprised when it topples over and spills dirty washing everywhere.

Waterproofing
If your laundry lives in the bathroom until washing day, make sure that the laundry basket is waterproof. Bathrooms are humid and water gets splashed about all over the place, so your basket will need to be able to cope with this to prevent unhealthy mold from growing on it.

Special features
Wicker laundry sorters are ideal if you can train your family members to sort their dirty washing between whites and colors when they place it in the basket.

Sturdy wicker baskets with padded cushions on the lids are ideal space savers as they can double up as seats.
